Nowadays
most popular cinema releases are available with subtitles & audio
description. More than 800
films have been released in the past few years with cinema subtitles
and/or audio description (full list below). More
than 300 UK cinemas
have the subtitle and/or audio description 'access' facilities necessary
to screen them.
In 2008 around 125 English language films were available
with subtitles. The annual figure rises year on year. Usually
the top ten films every week are available with subtitles.
In
2008, 49 of the top 50 films were subtitled. 84 of the top
100 films were subtitled.
The
100 most popular films of 2008 took around 90% of the box office revenue.
The remaining 400+ films, most of which were NOT subtitled & described,
accounted for just 10% of revenue. The
majority of films that were NOT subtitled & described had a very
limited release and were not screened in many multiplex cinemas (multiplex
cinemas account for around three quarters of UK cinemas). In 2008
only around a third of films were on nationwide release (screened
in over a hundred cinemas). More than a quarter of films were shown
in fewer than ten cinemas.
The
most popular cinema releases are usually available with subtitles
& description. More than 800 titles have been made available to
equipped cinemas since 2002.

Foreign language subtitled films are not fully accessible to people
with hearing impairments. The subtitles merely provide a translation
of the audio into a different language. They do not include proper
'captions for the hearing impaired', which can include off-screen
sounds such as 'door creaks', 'footsteps approaching', or 'gunshot'..

all major UK film distributors release most of their films with subtitles
and audio description, and many smaller distributors are becoming
"accessible" too. In the last few years UK film distributors
have released over 600 films with these features. But fact is not
all films are available with subtitle 'discs'. The discs are CD-Roms
which contain the subtitle 'files' that cinema subtitling systems
'read'. Think of it like a DVD without the picture or sound - just
the subtitles (and an audio description 'narrative' track for visually
impaired people) The disc sychronises with the film when it's played.
Most
popular cinema releases ARE available with subtitles - 8 to 10 of
the top ten films every week are available. But less popular films
are usually NOT subtitled. In fact out of the 500 or so cinema releases
a year, only around a quarter (125) are subtitled. The film industry
is working to improve this figure.
