"Just saw Mission: Impossible. I LOVED the exotic locales, fancy cars, beautiful (and dangerous) women, car chases, foot chases, fist fights, crazy stunts, gadgets, crazed terrorists, hired assassins and the sexy mysterious analyst. BUT without SUBTITLES I would not have had a CLUE as to what the HELL was going on! It makes ALL the difference. So much better than awaiting the (small screen) DVD. More please! Every film!"

Comedy. Charlize Theron plays Mavis, an author who returns to her hometown to rekindle a romance with her high school sweetheart. Problem is, the love of her life is now happily married with kids and getting on with his life. Things get even weirder when another former classmate appears on the scene with an equally strange fixation with those high school years that most people left behind long ago.

Carnage subtitled (15)
http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/carnage.html

1 hour 20 mins

Comedy from master director Roman Polanski that tells the story of two families who attempt to reconcile their children's differences over a civilised dinner that rapidly degenerates into a chaotically childish war of attrition. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz and Jodie Foster, 'Carnage' is an uncomfortable but hilarious study of the real characters that lurk behind the polite facades of respectable parents.

J. Edgar subtitled (15) 2 hours 16 mins

Clint Eastwood's 'J. Edgar' is a fascinating portrait of J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio), the face of American law enforcement for almost 50 years. The man directly responsible for the F.B.I's operations and methods still used today, Hoover's cunning and sheer force of personality kept him in this powerful position under seven different presidents. And more!
On release in many cinemas: foreign language films with English subtitles. Latest releases include:

The Artist (Apart from some music, the film is 99% silent, with caption cards for dialogue).

An exquisitely judged, gloriously funny and achingly tender film by the French director Michel Hazanavicius, a movie about the black and white silent age of Hollywood, which is itself in black and white, and silent – or almost silent (warning - contains mild spoilers...)

In an instance of sound in 'The Artist' George Valentin is having a nightmare after seeing his wife's sound test… he dreams that he hears noise, but his voice has gone. So in the film itself we get him mouthing words, but there is sound - his glass being set down on the table, his dog barking and the giggle of the dancers walking by his dressing room… and then he wakes up, and everything's back to normal. In another scene, George and Peppy are tap dancing. The scene ends and pans out to the director and cameramen, the director shouts 'Cut!' and the noise of a working film studio can be heard. George Valentin speaks - without a caption card. When asked if they can do the scene over, he says 'It would be my pleasure.'

There is a continuous orchestral score by Ludovic Bource. "The Artist" heads the Golden Globes with six nominations, among them best comedy or musical, and acting honors for its French stars, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. Trailer here

Although most popular cinema releases are available with subtitles, not all 'subtitle' equipped cinemas show all available films. And many shows are at unsuitable times. Why? And what can we do about it?

Subtitled and audio described (narrated) cinema enables people with hearing or sight loss to enjoy film presented in its original and best form - the cinema. The award-winning, industry-supported 'Your Local Cinema .com' website & information service exists to create nationwide awareness of - and build audiences for - subtitled & audio described films & shows.

Cinema subtitles, displayed along the bottom of the screen, include the spoken text as well as descriptions of sounds such as 'door creaks', 'footsteps approaching', 'gunshot'.

"I enjoyed A Christmas Carol a lot. I can hear well with my digital hearing aids, compared to many deaf people I know, but the unfamiliar, oldie-style Dickensian words would have been lost on me without subtitles."

Cinema audio description is a recorded narration, delivered through wireless headphones, which explains, during gaps in the dialogue, what is happening on screen.

"The cinema audio description experience is like listening to a Harry Potter audio book, but with all the actors voicing their own parts and with the addition of the film's complete soundtrack – delivered in fabulous surround sound"

It's the accessible cinema experience: SEE the dialogue! HEAR the action!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

In recent years, the progress made in the field of cinema access has been fantastic.

It is estimated that about nine million people in the UK have some level of hearing loss – one in seven of the population. Each year around 800 children are born in the UK with significant hearing loss while more than 700,000 people, including 34,000 children and young people, are severely or profoundly deaf. Some two million have significant sight loss and every day another 100 people start to lose their sight.

Before 2000, the only way people with severe hearing loss could enjoy cinema was to watch a foreign-language film. And people with severe sight loss would never dream of visiting a cinema.

Today people with any level of hearing or sight loss can enjoy the popular social activity of a trip to the cinema.

Most UK cinemas, including all 3D and digitally-equipped sites, now have subtitle facilities, and more than 300 can broadcast an audio described soundtrack (a compatible infra-red system and wireless headphones are required to broadcast an audio described soundtrack).

UK distributors ensure that most popular releases - including 3D films - are available in both subtitled and audio described versions. Every week exhibitors screen more than 800 English-language subtitled shows nationwide, and thousands more audio described performances.

For people with hearing or sight loss, cinema is not the out of bounds social activity of the past, but is now a very accessible, welcoming, exciting, day or night out with family or friends.

Please contact digitally-equipped cinemas in your area and request that they utilise the built in subtitle features of digital projectors!

Note: as with DVD releases, the film needs to have a subtitle track included for it to be broadcast. These days almost all popular releases are now released digitally, with a subtitle track.

A selection of quotes and reports from people with hearing or sight loss who have discovered - or rediscovered - the joys of cinema-going, thanks to subtitles and audio description:

"The cinema is the most accessible and thrilling social experience, where you can go with friends and family alike to watch the best and biggest new films. So why is it that I didn't go to the cinema for the first 19 years of my life? It was just pointless when I couldn't hear anything the characters said, but thanks to the efforts over the past decade, I've kept up with the cinematic world and socially, culturally and historically my life has become better for it. Some people may write Hollywood off as a bunch of overpaid babies, but having revelled in the beauty of foreign films for years due to subtitles, I can now do the same with brilliant films such as last year's Inception, Toy Story 3 and The Social Network. Thank you for making movies accessible to people like me"

"Have you ever tried to lip-read a masked super hero or villain? Or an animated rat, fish, car or robot? Without subtitles we just watch the pictures and guess the story"

"I enjoyed A Christmas Carol a lot. I can hear well with my digital hearing aids, compared to many deaf people I know, but the unfamiliar, oldie-style Dickensian words would have been lost on me without subtitles."

"My profoundly deaf mother had given up trying to lip-read movie stars years ago. At a subtitled show her eyes flickered into life. Two glorious hours and finally my mother and I have rekindled our cinema habit. She is now in her seventies, I'm approaching my forties. It May have been some time coming, but damn was it worth it! "

"My Granddad was a big film fan - Dad too - and I grew up with books and magazines on films and cinema in general. But being deaf, thanks to meningitis, I could never get the full cinema experience. My Granddad, also very deaf due to his advancing years, used to say it was better for people like us a hundred years ago when silent films were around as they had caption cards on the screen! I missed out on many films at the cinema, which I have since watched with subtitles on DVD. I believe that if my Granddad was alive today he'd be joining my Dad and me on our regular trips to the movies because captioned cinema has returned! "

"I know quite a few people who, like me, have become disabled in the prime of their lives. I served in Iraq, came home last year with permanent damage to my hearing. I can still enjoy music, it's just not as clear as it used to be. I find I now read a lot of song lyrics! Never really bothered before. Same with films. I can still enjoy them with a little 'assistance'. In this case, subtitles. I only go to the cinema now if the film is subtitled. Thankfully most are these days."

"The cinema audio description experience is like listening to a Harry Potter audio book, but with all the actors voicing their own parts and with the addition of the film's complete soundtrack - delivered in fabulous surround sound"

"After losing most of my sight four years ago I gave up on cinema - only to discover audio description some months later. I've since watched many more films. Watching 'Avatar' I felt just like one of the crowd, reacting with amazement just like the other people in the cinema. I actually felt like I had my vision back."

"I have lost my sight. You think I can't enjoy the cinema? Imagine the scariest film you know, only SCARIER! "

"Audio described cinema is wonderful, not just because it allows me to enjoy movies but to discuss them with sighted friends afterwards. Through cinema audio description, I have been able to follow up the recommendation of a friend who gushed about the beauty of the visuals in Volver. Conversely, I have been able to return the favour by plugging the striking images in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It doesn't matter that I couldn't 'see' them - the description was so vivid that I can still imagine Brad Pitt shooting into the ice, causing a puff of smoke to rise, or Casey Affleck in a rocking chair. When accompanying sighted friends, I can enjoy the car chase in Casino Royale and the decapitation by helicopter blade in 28 Weeks Later, relying on my memories of being a sighted gorehound."

Your Local Cinema.com is the cinema industry-sponsored listings and information service for 'accessible' cinema. Launched in 2000 it serves to create nationwide awareness of - and build audiences for - subtitled and audio described films and shows for people with hearing or sight loss.

It provides an accessible website (including a speech-enabled section), listing every subtitled or audio described cinema show in the UK, listed by film or location. The website also presents the latest film trailers with subtitles and many audio described film clips.

The service publishes an informative email newsletter directly to many thousands of interested parties weekly, and runs a 24/7 telephone call centre to inform people of accessible shows in their area.

Your Local Cinema .com is a member of the film industry's 'Disability Working Group'. This group of cinema companies, film distributors, technology companies and groups representing disabled people meet regularly with the aim to ensure that people with a physical or sensory impairment can enjoy the cinema experience.

In recent years the service has won many Awards - voted for by the cinema-going public - including the Daily Mail People's Choice Enterprise Award and the British Telecom BT Remote Workers Award. The company also made the final three in the 'Best Arts Project' category of the National Lottery Awards.

This year the service won the RAAM/Barco 'Innovation in Cinema' award. The RAAM Awards recognise the efforts, achievements and successes of companies and individuals in the film industry.

In 2011, the industry will focus on how this quiet, yet rather magnificent, social revolution can sustain its growth and generate still more impact. 'Your Local Cinema.com' will explore ways to develop its service and attract new audiences, maximising the output from its administrative efforts.

Your Local Cinema .com would not exist without the input and assistance of the groups below:

BFI - British Film Institute and the UK film industry
CEA - Cinema Exhibitors' Association and UK cinemas
FDA - Film Distributors' Association and UK film distributors
AIM: All Industry Marketing
ITFC, IMS, Dolby, DTS, Sound Associates and more.
