On release in many cinemas: foreign language films with English subtitles. Latest releases include: The Secret in their eyes (Spanish with English Subtitles) Committed federal prosecutor Benjam’n Esp—sito investigates a 1974 rape and murder. The trio?s efforts are countered by a rival lawyer, one whose motives are revealed to mesh with the tragedies of Argentina's fascist past. Winner of the 2010 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE (Swedish, Italian, French with English subtitles) The eagerly awaited second film adaptation from Stieg LarssonÕs Millennium Trilogy sees hacker Lisbeth Salander in serious danger when she comes under suspicion for murder - can journalist Mikael Blomkvist clear her name as he investigates a sex trafficking ring? THE ILLUSIONIST (LÕILLUSIONNISTE) (English, without subtitles, but mainly wordless) ChometÕs follow-up to Belleville Rendezvous is a delightful, almost wordless animation, based on a previously unmade script by French film icon Jacques Tati. Magician Tatishcheff travels from his native France to the wilds of Scotland, where he and his feral rabbit befriend a young girl, Alice. As the gigs on the Scottish island dry up, Tatischeff travels to Edinburgh in search of employment, and Alice runs away to join him in the big city.. Mother (Korean with English Subtitles) Slow-witted and with an unfortunate choice of friends, 27-year-old Do-jun is an easy stitch-up for the lazy cops when a young girl is murdered. His devoted mother meanwhile will stop at absolutely nothing to clear her sonÕs name. This bewitching mix of directorial elegance, black comedy and brilliantly twisty drama recalls the same directorÕs neo-classic Memories of Murder, and is another uniquely Korean delight. Gainsbourg (French with English Subtitles) An introspective glimpse into the world of French singer Serge Gainsbourg, from his tough childhood growing up in Nazi-occupied Paris to his death in 1991, via his troubled yet hugely successful time as a songwriter in the 1960s. Heartbreaker (French with English Subtitles) From its mischievous premise to its breezy execution, this is a brilliant romantic comedy that has plenty to appeal to both sexes. Heartbreaker is, hands down, one of the funniest and most consistently charming experiences youÕre likely to have in the cinema this year. [REC] 2 (Spanish with English subtitles). Cert 18 The sequel to the spine-chilling, critically acclaimed cult hit '[REC]', '[REC] 2' takes fear to a whole new level, on an adrenalin fuelled rollercoaster ride of sheer terror. Just 15 minutes have passed since the authorities lost contact with the people trapped inside a virus-stricken apartment block. Now a SWAT team must enter the building, equipped with video cameras, to monitor the situation. Nobody knows what has happened inside the building. But whatever evil awaits the SWAT team they must keep recording the unedited horror, at all costs. Subtitled trailer I Am Love (French with English Subtitles) Tilda Swinton stars in Luca Guadagnino's melodrama about a Milanese family. Operatic, Visconti-esque drama in which an ailing Milanese paterfamilias passes on the family business to his son and grandson, to the discomfort of his wife (played by Tilda Swinton), and their other two children. The award-winning, industry-supported 'Your Local Cinema .com' website & information service exists to create nationwide awareness of, and build audiences for, subtitled & audio described films & shows. Cinema subtitles, displayed along the bottom of the screen, include the spoken text as well as descriptions of sounds such as 'door creaks', 'footsteps approaching', 'gunshot'. Cinema audio description is a recorded narration, delivered through wireless headphones, which explains, during gaps in the dialogue, what is happening on screen. "It's the accessible cinema experience: SEE the dialogue! HEAR the action!" ___________________________________ In recent years, the progress made in the field of cinema access has been fantastic. It is estimated that about nine million people in the UK have some level of hearing loss Ð one in seven of the population. Each year around 800 children are born in the UK with significant hearing loss while more than 700,000 people, including 34,000 children and young people, are severely or profoundly deaf. Some two million have significant sight loss and every day another 100 people start to lose their sight. Before 2000, the only way people with severe hearing loss could enjoy cinema was to watch a foreign-language film. And people with severe sight loss would never dream of visiting a cinema. Today people with any level of hearing or sight loss can enjoy the popular social activity of a trip to the cinema. Every week thousands of people in hundreds of cinemas nationwide watch the latest films with on-screen subtitles, and many listen to a recorded narration of the film (audio description) through wireless headphones. Most UK cinemas, including all 3D and digitally- equipped sites, now have subtitle facilities, and more than 300 can broadcast an audio described soundtrack. UK distributors ensure that most popular releases - including 3D films - are available in both subtitled and audio described versions. Almost a thousand films have been made available to date. Most suitably-equipped cinemas utilise their 'access' facilities regularly and every week there are more than 550 English-language subtitled shows nationwide, and thousands more audio described performances. For people with hearing or sight loss, cinema is not the out of bounds social activity of the past, but is now a very accessible, welcoming, exciting, day or night out with family or friends. ___________________________________ Most cinemas are now equipped with new digital projection equipment. These digital projection systems have built-in subtitle readers. Any cinema with 3D or digital facilities can screen most of the latest cinema releases with subtitles. Subtitle 'files' are available for almost all popular cinema releases (including 3D films). These files can be 'read' by digital projection systems, overlaying subtitles on the cinema screen, to enable people with hearing loss to enjoy cinema. Please contact digitally-equipped cinemas in your area and request that they utilise the built in subtitle features of digital projectors! Note: as with DVD releases, the film needs to have a subtitle track included for it to be broadcast. These days almost all popular releases are now released digitally, with a subtitle track. Most film distributors ensure that their most popular releases are available with subtitles. The box office top 20 films of 2009 were available. 41 of the top 50 and 71 out of the top 100 were available. In the UK most subtitle-equipped cinemas utilise their subtitle facilities regularly and every week there are more than 550 English language subtitled shows nationwide. Although most popular cinema releases are available with subtitles, not all 'subtitle' equipped cinemas show all available films. And many shows are at unsuitable times. Why? And what can we do about it? The larger film distributors aim to ensure that 100% of their titles are accessible, but many smaller distributors still fail to add subtitle & audio description tracks to their releases. Ideally, every distributor that has had a film in the top 100 box office films should ensure that their major cinema releases (at least) are accessible. Many people that would like to attend subtitled shows still cannot do so as often as they would like - there's simply not enough choice of showing dates & times. All digital-equipped sites have subtitle facilities, and most popular releases now include a subtitle track in the digital film file. Making regular use of the built-in subtitle features of digital systems could almost double the amount of cinemas that regularly screen subtitled shows. From just over 300 (end 2009 figure) to more than 500 nationwide. What can we do about it? Please read more here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/explanation.html ___________________________________ An award winning service. In 2009 the 'Your Local Cinema .com' website & information service was successful in winning some high-profile awards voted for by the public. Winning awards helps to spread awareness of 'accessible' cinema. Awards: The British Telecom 'BT Remote Workers' Award', which honours people who manage to run a successful business without an office, using mobile technology such as a laptop or smartphone. Hundreds of entries were received for the awards and the judges selected the winner based on the individual or company that demonstrated how remote working had created the greatest positive impact. The Daily Mail 'People's Choice' Enterprise Award. The event, hosted by the Institute of Directors, recognises people who have turned their ideas into reality. Finalists had to endure a 'Dragons Den' style pitching process from the high profile judges. Thousands of people, including readers of the Daily Mail newspaper voted for the twenty finalists, and Your Local Cinema .com' received the most votes overall. Furthermore, our service beat hundreds of projects, with many thousands of votes, to make the final three in the 'Best Arts Project' category of the 2009 National Lottery Awards. The Awards recognise the difference that lottery funded projects have made to local communities. The ceremony was broadcast live, primetime, on BBC1, exposing millions of people to accessible cinema. ___________________________________ A selection of quotes and reports from people with hearing or sight loss who have discovered - or rediscovered - the joys of cinema-going, thanks to subtitles and audio description: "Have you ever tried to lip-read a masked super hero or villain? Or an animated rat, fish, car or robot? Without subtitles we just watch the pictures and guess the story" "I enjoyed A Christmas Carol a lot. I can hear well with my digital hearing aids, compared to many deaf people I know, but the unfamiliar, oldie-style Dickensian words would have been lost on me without subtitles." "My profoundly deaf mother had given up trying to lip-read movie stars years ago. At a subtitled show her eyes flickered into life. Two glorious hours and finally my mother and I have rekindled our cinema habit. She is now in her seventies, I'm approaching my forties. It May have been some time coming, but damn was it worth it!" "My Granddad was a big film fan Ð Dad too Ð and I grew up with books and magazines on films and cinema in general. But being deaf, thanks to meningitis, I could never get the full cinema experience. My Granddad, also very deaf due to his advancing years, used to say it was better for people like us a hundred years ago when silent films were around as they had caption cards on the screen! I missed out on many films at the cinema, which I have since watched with subtitles on DVD. I believe that if my Granddad was alive today he'd be joining my Dad and me on our regular trips to the movies because captioned cinema has returned!" "I know quite a few people who, like me, have become disabled in the prime of their lives. I served in Iraq, came home last year with permanent damage to my hearing. I can still enjoy music, it's just not as clear as it used to be. I find I now read a lot of song lyrics! Never really bothered before. Same with films. I can still enjoy them with a little 'assistance'. In this case, subtitles. I only go to the cinema now if the film is subtitled. Thankfully most are these days." "The cinema audio description experience is like listening to a Harry Potter audio book, but with all the actors voicing their own parts and with the addition of the film's complete soundtrack Ð delivered in fabulous surround sound" "After losing most of my sight four years ago I gave up on cinema - only to discover audio description some months later. I've since watched many more films. Watching 'Avatar' I felt just like one of the crowd, reacting with amazement just like the other people in the cinema. I actually felt like I had my vision back." "I have lost my sight. You think I can't enjoy the cinema? Imagine the scariest film you know, only SCARIER!" "Audio described cinema is wonderful, not just because it allows me to enjoy movies but to discuss them with sighted friends afterwards. Through cinema audio description, I have been able to follow up the recommendation of a friend who gushed about the beauty of the visuals in Volver. Conversely, I have been able to return the favour by plugging the striking images in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It doesn't matter that I couldn't 'see' them Ð the description was so vivid that I can still imagine Brad Pitt shooting into the ice, causing a puff of smoke to rise, or Casey Affleck in a rocking chair. When accompanying sighted friends, I can enjoy the car chase in Casino Royale and the decapitation by helicopter blade in 28 Weeks Later, relying on my memories of being a sighted gorehound."
