The Headless Woman 
(12a) (Spanish with English subtitles) Disturbing and deeply mysterious, this tale of ghosts and guilt is nothing short of a masterpiece (Guardian). Verónica is a well-to-do, middle-aged dentist whose life becomes plagued with doubt following her involvement in a possible hit-and-run accident.  

My Name Is Khan 
subtitled (12a) Karan Johar directs Indian superstars Shahrukh Khan (SRK) and Kajol Devgan in a film controversial for its plotlines involving US homeland security and terrorism. SRK plays an Indian man with Asperger's syndrome who, for reasons revealed as the film unfolds, is on a quest to personally deliver a message to the US president. Note: This film is showing in cinemas nationwide in Hindi language with English subtitles. But much of the film is also in English language, with no subtitles. Cinemas can also show a version that is accessible to people with hearing loss, with English subtitles for the English-spoken parts also.

Most cinemas are now equipped with new digital projection equipment. These digital projection systems have built-in subtitle readers. 

Any cinema with 3D or digital facilities can screen most of the latest cinema releases with subtitles.

Subtitle 'files' are available for almost all popular cinema releases (including 3D films). These files can be 'read' by digital projection systems, overlaying subtitles on the cinema screen, to enable people with hearing loss to enjoy cinema. 

Please contact digitally-equipped cinemas in your area and request that they utilise the built in subtitle features of digital projectors!

Note: as with DVD releases, the film needs to have a subtitle track included for it to be broadcast. These days almost all popular releases are now released digitally, with a subtitle track.

Most film distributors ensure that their most popular releases are available with subtitles. The box office top 20 films of 2009 were available. 41 of the top 50 and 71 out of the top 100 were available.

In the UK most subtitle-equipped cinemas utilise their subtitle facilities regularly and every week there are more than 550 English language subtitled shows nationwide.

"Audio described cinema is wonderful, not just because it allows me to enjoy movies but to discuss them with sighted friends afterwards. Through cinema audio description, I have been able to follow up the recommendation of a friend who gushed about the beauty of the visuals in Volver. Conversely, I have been able to return the favour by plugging the striking images in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It doesn't matter that I couldn't 'see' them – the description was so vivid that I can still imagine Brad Pitt shooting into the ice, causing a puff of smoke to rise, or Casey Affleck in a rocking chair. When accompanying sighted friends, I can enjoy the car chase in Casino Royale and the decapitation by helicopter blade in 28 Weeks Later, relying on my memories of being a sighted gorehound."

About cinema subtitles & audio description.

Cinema subtitles/captions are displayed along the bottom of the cinema screen. They include the spoken text as well as descriptions of sounds such as 'door creaks', 'footsteps approaching', 'gunshot' etc. 

Cinema audio description is a recorded narration which explains - in gaps in the dialogue - what's happening on screen. It's delivered through wireless headphones - only the wearer hears the audio description soundtrack. One blind cinema-goer has likened the experience to listening to a Harry Potter audio book, but with all the actors voicing their own parts, and the addition of the film soundtrack - in fabulous surround sound.
