What are 'Digitally subtitled' films?

Almost every major film is released in this format, but only cinemas with digital subtitle equipment can screen them (listed above).

The subtitle 'files' are supplied on CD Rom disc (for now), and are projected separately onto the cinema screen. Most cinemas with this facility screen the latest releases with subtitles two or three times a week.

Cinemas with this equipment can also provide an audio description service to visually impaired people - a recorded narrator explains what's happening on screen, through personal headphones. It's similar to listening to a cricket match on the radio, but far more exciting!

For the time being, there are two different subtitling & audio description systems, made by DTS (still going strong) and Dolby (now discontinued). Most popular films are released with subtitles for BOTH systems, but sometimes a film is only compatible with one, or the other.

This should change in 2008/9, when digital projectors will be more widely available, and more affordable. These have built in subtitle readers, but films need to be configured to be compatible with digital projector/server systems. To date only a handful of films have been produced in this format.
